Comparison with other CS software
Yes, there are and there will be other Rorschach software programs for the CS.
~ One is very inexpensive. It doesn’t do much.
~ Some use hybrid coding systems. Be prepared to establish your own norms.
~ One has been in a prolonged beta version. Enjoy errors, bugs, lock-ups, and crashes?
~ One is owned and sold by a large company which has coasted on their market dominance for many years, still selling DOS software in late 1999 – and for a higher price than ROR-SCAN for Windows. Finally forced by ROR-SCAN to play "catch-up", it now sells a Windows version. Many features are "me too" attempts to keep up with ROR-SCAN’s innovations. The "special introductory price" is $70 higher than ROR-SCAN’s undiscounted price. Dr. Exner is no longer involved with the program and did not write the narrative. It has been rewritten, taking another cue from ROR-SCAN’s clear clinical language. However, the new version remains a set of on-line textbooks, just as was the DOS version.
Warning: The company has distributed a document which purports to compare ROR-SCAN V5 to their product. Please be aware that at least 10 of the assertions about ROR-SCAN in that document are untrue and may have been partly based on our earlier beta versions. Other comparisons are either opinions or are misleading. In addition, technical support personnel have made "informal" comments asserting copyright infringement which are unjustifed and slanderous.
Here is our own chart comparing ROR-SCAN V5 with features advertised by the "large company" to describe their software: (In addition, features listed in our "Software Tour" are unique to ROR-SCAN.)
Exner and Weiner as basis for scoring and interpretation
RS adds selected and newer non-text journal research plus teachings by Rorschach Workshops®.
RS adds Gacono & Meloy Aggressive Content.
Several methods of data entry "to accomodate scorer skill level"
RS was first to accept either string data entry or mouse clicks. Skill is needed to code, not to enter data. "Uniquely" user-friendly
Users say RS is intuitive, friendly, and fun. Checks for coding errors
RS checks and also prevents errors Help file for coding errors with help buttons
RS had it first. RS also highlights problem fields. RS help includes complete context sensitive coding criteria with examples, not just help with errors. "Explorer-like" interface provides overview of protocol
RS displays the overview. Do you need a Microsoft look with multiple overlapping windows? On-screen interactive FQ tables and Location charts
RS had them first. FQ Tables accept new Content for one-click coding of FQ, Area, and Location. Unlimited-use
RS also offers a $100 year-long Student Edition. On-screen Structural Summary and Sequence of Scores
RS adds the on-screen Interpretive narrative and Client Report, both disclosing scoring basis for hypotheses. "Professionally" formatted narrative report
(We confess to not knowing what an unprofessionally formatted report is.) Invalid reports due to low R show the constellations but not the ratios, percentages, or derivations
Since the constellations include ratios and %’s, constellations are not valid if low R makes the ratios and %’s invalid. RS shows the Sequence if R is too low. Prints the Structural Summary, Sequence, and interpretive report, each selected optionally
Of course. RS also prints the Client Report. RS also exports text to a word processor. Records general notes, names of other tests
RS believes those notes go elsewhere. A field is provided to record notes for each Rorschach response. Recording of verbal content
RS allows recording of the entire protocol and inquiry. Optional user-defined password
RS also adds a rescue if you forget. Tutorial
RS had it first – and has two of them.
ROR-SCAN is a one-man, one-product "company" whose future depends solely on ROR-SCAN, not other psychological supplies. Therefore, to retain its superiority, ROR-SCAN stays abreast of the research and offers updates when enough accumulates, just as all prior versions have included non-textbook peer-reviewed journal research. Changes are on the way for the CS, as previewed by Dr. Exner and the Rorschach Workshops Research Council. Those changes will be incorporated into RS when they are made official.
RS is developed and written by an experienced Rorschacher who enjoys intuitive, enjoyable software, not by techies guessing how Rorschachers think. Now in its 11th year, RS has always sought out comments and suggestions from users to design each new version. RS strives to use the best technology available. V5 runs on all versions of Windows from 3.1 up, including NT, on Windows-enabled Macs, and on a network (LAN). Educational, student, and competitive upgrade discounts are available. Free and unlimited technical support is provided directly by the author and can most often be implemented remotely by email, telephone, or fax. Minor upgrades are downloadable, some by email and some from this Web site. The current release of ROR-SCAN is stable and bug-free. We strive to maintain these standards and to set still higher ones in the future.
